Tech's Hidden Prejudice: How iTutorGroup's AI Revealed Ageism in Hiring

Midjourney

Have you heard about that Chinese tutoring company, iTutorGroup? Well… they were using AI for hiring, but it was biased against older applicants. It's like the AI was mimicking how society sometimes overlooks older folks for jobs. Sound crazy, right?

Here’s the kicker: The AI used was just doing what it was taught. It learned from human data, and if that data showed a preference for younger people, the AI picked it up too, an all too familiar problem of biased input = biased output when it comes to training an LLM. iTutorGroup had to pay a whopping $365,000 fine to over 200 job applicants they passed over because of their age which comes out to $1,825 per applicant.

Now, here's why it's a wake-up call: This isn't just about one company; it's a reflection of a bigger problem. If we're not careful, our technology will just amplify our biases. This, paired with last week’s coverage of Connecticut’s sticky situation, are signs that we need to check ourselves and how we're influencing AI. We've got to be more responsible and aware of what we're teaching our machines.

If we're naturally passing over older people, what does that say about our values and assumptions? Perhaps we assume they won't fit into a youthful company culture or that they can’t keep up with the current fast-paced world of tech? It's a moment to reflect on how we view age and experience. It's not just a tech issue; it's a human issue. And fixing it means looking in the mirror and challenging our own biases. That fine is a stark reminder that our actions have real consequences, and our assumptions can be costly.

The Future of Political Warfare: AI, Ethics, and a Ticking Clock to 2024

Midjourney

The Federal Election Commission (FEC) is finally considering rules for AI-generated content in political ads. You know those deepfakes and AI-generated videos you’ve seen on social media, like Deep Tom (which if you haven’t seen, definitely check it out)? Well, they’re not just sci-fi anymore; they're becoming political tools, and the FEC is waking up to it.

Public Citizen, an advocacy group, is pushing hard for these FEC rules as they see deep fakes and AI deception in election ads as something that needs to be regulated urgently - we agree. On the other side of the table is the Republican National Committee (RNC) and others who are already using AI to create attack videos and fake images. They’re racing ahead, and the regulators are playing a game of catch-up.

Take a look at how people reacted to AI-generated political ads👇

Like a game of political chess, AI is the new queen of the board and if one side uses it without restraint, will the other only call foul when they're losing? It's a tangled web, and it's making the whole regulation process even more complex.

What's really at stake here is more than just politics but the ethics, transparency, and the very fabric of our society as this isn’t just a tech issue but it's a human issue. It's not just about cool tech; it's a battle for the soul of US democracy, and the clock is ticking.
