Humane's Enigmatic AI-Powered Wearable: The AI Pin
Midjourney
Humane, a stealthy startup founded by former Apple employees Bethany Bongiorno and Imran Chaudhri, has been a hot topic in the tech community and have yet to reveal much about what they do... The company has teased its inaugural product, the AI Pin, describing it as a “connected and intelligent clothing-based wearable device” equipped with various sensors for contextual and ambient compute interactions. The device recently made its public debut on supermodel Naomi Campbell's lapel at Paris Fashion Week. Designed as a screenless, standalone device, the AI Pin aims to integrate naturally into users' daily lives while prioritizing privacy features such as no 'always on' listening feature.
Humane secured a $30 million Series A in late 2020 at a $150 million valuation, followed by a $100 million Series B in September 2021. It boasts a strong investor lineup, including Tiger Global Management, SoftBank Group, BOND, Forerunner Ventures, Qualcomm Ventures, and Sam Altman (CEO of OpenAI).
Humane's rhetoric is filled with buzzwords galore “a new paradigm of ambient, AI-driven computing”, but what that actually entails remains to be seen. The company promises a proper unveiling at a November 9 event, where it will hopefully deliver on its high-reaching claims.
The tease of Pin AI comes just before Avi Schiffmann, announced their amulet-esque necklace, Tab, an omni-present AI agent that listens and ingests everything you say. Take a look at the unveiling of how Tab fills the gap that other LLMs like ChatGPT, Bard, or Claude can’t 👇
I just built the world’s most personal wearable AI!
You can talk to Tab about anything in your life. Our computers are now our creative partners!

Concerns of privacy are of course quite prevalent with an always-on, always-listening device, but Avi reassures that Tab will not store any audio recordings, transcripts, and is compliant with GDPR and other relevant regulations.
Do Tab and PinAI share some DNA? 100%. But we’ll only know what exactly Humane is building at their unveiling in 5 weeks…

AI and Fluorescent Dye: A Game-Changer in Monitoring Movement
Midjourney
Eiman Azim and his team at Salk are building GlowTrack an innovative technology that employs fluorescent dye markers to precisely and efficiently track both human and animal movements. This breakthrough technique can detail movements as minute as a single digit on a mouse's paw or multiple landmarks on a human hand.
GlowTrack addresses the shortcomings of traditional tracking methods, especially the time-consuming and error-prone requirement for manual annotation of body parts. Conventional tracking systems required meticulous human labeling, which was not only tedious but also restricted to narrowly defined testing scenarios. GlowTrack, on the other hand, uses fluorescent dye to mark body parts, streamlining the data collection process. This marked data can then be swiftly integrated into AI models, allowing for more versatile movement tracking across various settings and at a level of detail previously unattainable with manual labeling.
Looking ahead: the team is poised to enhance GlowTrack's capabilities. They're exploring the integration of GlowTrack with other tools that map movements in 3D and are keen on developing strategies to identify patterns within vast movement datasets. The potential impact of GlowTrack is vast; it could revolutionize sectors like sports science, robotics, and video gaming, where accurate and rapid movement tracking is paramount.

📝 Remembering You: Google Bard’s New Feature to Personalize Conversations
Google's Bard chatbot is set to become more personalized with an upcoming "Memory" feature. This feature is similar to the existing custom instructions in ChatGPT, and will allow Bard to remember important details you share, enhancing future interactions. For example, if you mention being on a gluten-free diet or having 2 kids, Bard will consider these details when offering recipe suggestions or travel recommendations. Users can manage these preferences from a dedicated Memory page, and a toggle will be available for those concerned about privacy, allowing them to easily turn off the Memory feature.
🛑 Medium Blocks OpenAI's ChatGPT: A Stand Against Content Scraping
Medium has announced it will block OpenAI from scraping its content, joining other media outlets like CNN and The New York Times in this decision. The move comes as companies add “User-Agent: GPTBot” to their robots.txt files to restrict web scraping by automated agents. Medium's CEO, Tony Stubblebine, argues that the current state of generative AI exploits content creators without compensation. While Medium’s approach is essentially voluntary, the platform is looking to form a coalition with other major organizations to discuss the future of fair use in the AI age. Stubblebine notes that forming multi-industry partnerships can be slow and fraught with unsettled legal and ethical questions.
📝 AI in Journalism: A Double-Edged Sword for Efficiency and Ethics
A new report by JournalismAI, an initiative backed by Polis at the London School of Economics and the Google News Initiative, reveals that AI is increasingly being utilized in journalism. More than 75% of survey respondents from 105 newsrooms in 46 countries admitted to using AI tools in news gathering, production, and distribution. While AI brings efficiency and productivity gains, over 60% of respondents were concerned about ethical issues like editorial quality, accuracy, fairness, and transparency. Despite the prevalent use of AI in newsrooms—90% in news production, 80% in distribution, and 75% in gathering—only about a third said their organizations have or are developing an AI strategy.
💻 AI-Led Security: NSA’s New Center Targets AI Vulnerabilities and Threats
The National Security Agency (NSA) is launching an artificial intelligence security center to bolster U.S. defense and intelligence systems against cyber threats, particularly from China and Russia. Army Gen. Paul Nakasone, the outgoing director of the NSA, said the center will be part of the NSA's Cybersecurity Collaboration Center, working with the private sector and international allies. While the U.S. maintains an AI advantage, Nakasone warned that it should not be taken for granted. The center aims to secure AI models from theft and sabotage, working closely with U.S. industry, national labs, academia, and the Department of Defense.
