The Future is Now: Meta's Blows the Lid off AI and Mixed Reality
Midjourney
Meta is pushing the boundaries of both artificial intelligence and mixed reality, aiming to create an increasingly seamless blend of digital and physical worlds. Their annual Connect conference announced a plethora of innovations: the Meta Quest 3 mixed-reality headset, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and AI characters for social media platforms. The AI tech is driven by its new Llama 2 models and promises to revolutionize user interactions through more creative, expressive, and productive tools.
But perhaps what captivates the imagination the most is how real the virtual world can be. In a recent podcast, CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Lex Fridman held an interview not in a studio but in the metaverse, a photorealistic virtual space. The level of realism was so impressive that Fridman commented on "forgetting that Zuckerberg wasn't real," highlighting Meta's potential in making virtual interactions as nuanced and expressive as real-world ones. This advance, Zuckerberg notes, is part of a 3-year roadmap, aiming for people to be "fully themselves" in the Metaverse. Take a look at the podcast below to see just how realistic it looks
Here's my conversation with Mark Zuckerberg, his 3rd time on the podcast, but this time we talked in the Metaverse as photorealistic avatars. This was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. It really felt like we were talking in-person, but we were miles apart 🤯 It's… twitter.com/i/web/status/1…

For those interested in the business applications, Meta's AI Studio platform will let companies build AI chatbots optimized for e-commerce and customer service experiences. In addition, the AI assistant will have real-time Bing search integration and be available across WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram, showing Meta's comprehensive approach to interconnectivity.
Whether it’s realistic virtual meetings that might soon replace Zoom or AI bots that might be your next customer service representative, Meta is betting big on a future where AI isn't just a tool but a fully integrated part of our digital lives.

Navigating Love in the Age of AI: Bumble's Vision for the Future
In a recent talk at the Code Conference, Whitney Wolfe Herd, the CEO of Bumble, Inc., offered a compelling vision of how artificial intelligence is already shaping and will continue to transform the online dating experience. While AI in the tech world often evokes images of virtual companions or automated customer service agents, Bumble has been quietly utilizing this advanced technology for years to improve user matching and safety features. She emphasized that their algorithms are AI-driven meticulously designed to evaluate user compatibility and relevance.
Beyond mere algorithms for matching, Bumble is enthusiastic about the potential of AI as a supercharger for love and relationships. Herd clarified that Bumble has no intention of turning romantic engagements into sci-fi affairs with virtual boyfriends or girlfriends. Instead, the focus is on addressing the real pain points in online dating—like reducing friction and stress during the search for a compatible partner. One innovative concept under consideration is an AI-powered personal matchmaker or dating coach. This virtual guru would gather intricate details about what each user values in a relationship, then cross-reference this with other digital matchmakers to find the most compatible matches. The goal is to make the tedious process of finding a compatible partner simpler and more effective, saving users from the endless cycle of swiping and chatting.
The opportunities for AI in online dating don't stop at matchmaking, according to Herd. Other future applications could include AI-driven image recognition techniques to identify common interests or even the automation of date planning—like making restaurant reservations. As a business leader, she is also mindful of the bottom line; AI integration will not only improve user experience but will also add a premium layer to Bumble's service offerings. While she didn't discuss pricing details, it's clear that this technology will elevate Bumble's position in a competitive market, echoing industry trends like Tinder's new $500-per-month premium tier.

🎬 Rabbit AI: Tubi's Answer to Personalized Streaming
Tubi, a Fox-owned streaming service, is beta-testing a new feature called Rabbit AI, built on OpenAI's GPT-4 technology. This feature aims to revolutionize content discovery by offering hyper-personalized recommendations from Tubi's library of over 200,000 titles. Users can ask specific questions like, "Do you have any movies that are funny about sharks?" and get tailored responses. Additional features include the ability to bookmark selections and save search histories in Rabbit Holes. Initially available on Tubi’s iOS mobile app, it will soon be accessible to OpenAI paying subscribers.
💡 Mistral 7B: The New, Affordable Frontier in Language Models
Mistral, a French AI startup, has unveiled its inaugural language model, Mistral 7B, claiming it outperforms other models of similar size and is free to use. The model is distributed under the Apache 2.0 license, allowing anyone—from hobbyists to large corporations—to use it without restrictions, apart from requiring attribution. Mistral 7B is a leaner alternative to bigger language models like GPT-4, offering comparable capabilities at a significantly reduced compute cost. Released after three months of intense work, the model is part of Mistral's larger ambition to lead and support the open generative AI community.
🛠 Amazon Levels Up CodeWhisperer with Enterprise Tier
Amazon has introduced CodeWhisperer Enterprise Tier, a new plan for its AI-powered code suggestion service. This enterprise plan allows companies to integrate their internal codebases and receive custom coding recommendations. Admins can connect CodeWhisperer to private code repositories, manage customizations, and view evaluation metrics. Launched in response to GitHub Copilot, CodeWhisperer has seen various versions, including a free tier and a Professional Tier with additional security features. Amid ongoing controversy over the legal implications of AI-generated code, Amazon also includes a feature to highlight and filter licenses associated with the suggested code snippets.
🕸️ Google's Bard AI: Now Seeking Your Consent After the Fact
Google is giving web publishers the choice to prevent their content from being used to train its Bard AI and future models. To opt out, publishers need to adjust their site's robots.txt file to disallow "User-Agent: Google-Extended." Although Google states it develops AI ethically, this feature arrives after the company has already trained models on large amounts of web data without explicit consent. VP of Trust Danielle Romain, emphasizes the move is to help improve Bard and Vertex AI generative APIs, but critics argue this is a post-facto attempt to appear ethical. Medium, among others, is blocking such crawlers until a more nuanced solution emerges.
