⚙️ Algo-kadabra

Good morning. Today, AI is brewing potions of algorithmic magic and penning tales with a Shakespearean quill. It's like Hogwarts meets Silicon Valley - sorting, hashing, and writing enchantments abound. If the only thing you take away from today’s email is one spell, let it be "Algo-kadabra!", algorithms start to sort at superspeed… more on that later.

DeepMind’s AlphaDev: Kicking Algorithm Butt Like Never Before

Midjourney

AlphaDev, the new AI from the future (just kidding, it’s from now), created by Google’s DeepMind is shaking up the algorithm game like a mad scientist on an energy drink binge.

You know sorting? That mundane thing we've done since the era of cavemen organizing rocks? Well, with some AI hocus-pocus, AlphaDev can now use something called reinforcement learning - think a computer playing solitaire, but instead, it's assembling an algorithm piece by piece, and it “wins” by making a faster algorithm - to discover faster sorting algorithms on its own.

AlphaDev’s current algorithms outperform decades of human benchmarks from engineers and scientists.

But that’s not all, AlphaDev said something along the lines of “Sorting is for plebs, let’s get hashing” and BAM, hashing algorithms got an upgrade too.

For those of you who code in C++, AlphaDev's algorithm was introduced into LLVM libc++ library which is used by millions of software developers.

Here’s an example of what AlphaDev was able to do with a sorting algorithm. It is able to come up with novel ways to solve problems (similar to AlpahGo’s move 37 when DeepMind’s Go algorithm defeated legendary Go player, Lee Sedol).

The catch? There ain’t one. It’s just pure, unadulterated, algorithmic brilliance, bottled up in a delightful AI package. Hats off to AlphaDev for serving up a feast in what could've been a coding nothingburger.

If you want to dive deeper into the technicals of how AlphaDev works you can check out their announcement here.

LinkedIn's New AI Magic Wand Revamps Your Copy Game

Midjourney

LinkedIn junkies, brace yourselves as your beloved networking haven now serves up AI-generated copy to boost your ad game. Will it be good enough to say 'ta-ta' to writer's block and plain Jane copies?

LinkedIn is taking a leaf outta Meta's book (or maybe an entire branch) and introducing its own AI to suggest varying text for your ads. It's all hocus-pocus data alchemy, transforming bits from your LinkedIn page and campaign settings into a cauldron of eye-catching introductory text. Using this tool is easier than sliding into DMs. Got your ad copy ready? Toss it into the “introductory text” box in the Campaign Manager, flip the “Generate copy suggestions” switch, and watch magic unfold.

Well, who's the mastermind behind this new spell? Models built by OpenAI, of course. It seems like everyone and their mother is building their own “wrapper” on GPT models…

LinkedIn isn't stopping at ad copies; they've been on an AI spree. Remember that handy-dandy “conversation starter” tool? Or back in March, when they introduced generative AI tools for crafting dapper profile bios and captivating recruitment posts.

Quick disclaimer: LinkedIn isn’t leaving any breadcrumbs to indicate if your next genius post or ad was a stroke of your brilliance or AI's clever craft.

RAPID-FIRE AI NEWS

💸 Cohere Achieves $2.2B Valuation with Fresh Funding Round

Cohere, a Toronto-based AI startup specializing in foundation models, recently secured $270 million in a funding round featuring prominent investors such as Nvidia, Oracle, and Salesforce Ventures. The company, run by former top AI researchers from Google, is carving its niche as a neutral provider, allowing enterprises to use models not tethered to specific cloud providers. The fresh capital injection will boost Cohere's computing resources and hiring endeavors. Despite the undisclosed valuation, insiders peg the figure at $2.2 billion.

🏛️ Senators Propose Bipartisan AI Bill to Stay Competitive with China

U.S. senators are introducing the bipartisan Global Technology Leadership Act, aiming to bolster the country's position in critical technologies like AI, particularly against rivals like China. The proposed legislation will establish an Office of Global Competition Analysis, which will be tasked with assessing the competitiveness of the U.S. in key technology areas. Experts from various agencies, including the intelligence community and the Pentagon, will comprise the office. The bill is part of Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer's plan to prioritize AI development and comes in response to the increasing use of AI by adversaries.

🇺🇸 Uncle Sam's new BFF, GPT-4

Microsoft, the guardian of OpenAI (and its wallet), is rolling out the red carpet for the U.S. Government. Government organizations can now use OpenAI's GPT-4 & GPT-3 through Azure Government cloud computing service. They’re hosting OpenAI’s models in their Azure infrastructure so any data sent is securely locked up in the Azure OpenAI service vault.

🩺 Google Cloud Partners with Mayo Clinic for AI in Healthcare

Google Cloud has announced a collaboration with Mayo Clinic, testing a service called Enterprise Search on Generative AI App Builder. The new tool enables users to create chatbots that can sift through vast amounts of internal data. In the healthcare context, this tool can help professionals interpret data such as patient medical history, genomics, and lab results more swiftly, even if the information is stored in different formats or locations. Mayo Clinic will explore various use cases for this tool over the coming months, aiming to reduce administrative tasks that often contribute to clinician burnout. Google is emphasizing a "safety over speed" approach with the Enterprise Search tool, with Mayo Clinic as an early adopter of the technology.
