Unveiling Bard’s New Powers: Google’s AI Chatbot Gets a Major Update
Google just unveiled an enhanced version of its generative AI chatbot, Bard, which now offers an ecosystem of integrations with Google's suite of applications, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Maps, YouTube, and even Google Flights & Hotels. This is a part of Bard Extensions a feature currently rolled out to only the English version of Bard. Bard Extension’s focus on user choice and control makes this release particularly compelling. Users opt-in for Bard to interact with personal applications like Gmail, Drive, and Docs and can revoke permissions anytime. Bard is designed not to use personal data for reinforcement learning, reinforcing Google's commitment to user trust.
These updates could save a TON of time. For example, if you need to compile a report based on various documents, Bard can search through your Google Drive, identify the necessary files, and even help draft portions of the report in Google Docs. Or, if you're preparing for a meeting and need a quick refresh on prior emails or documentation, Bard can pull all relevant information and summarize it for you and even help prep questions or talking points without you enduring through endless email threads or folders.
The update also brings a “Google It” feature that validates every sentence Bard generates against Google Search results. This acts as a fact-checking mechanism, allowing users to click “Google It” on highlighted phrases to see more information. If Bard is uncertain about something, that text will be highlighted in orange, helping the user understand when the AI might be inaccurate.
This is a massive step towards full-fledged AI agents, and with plans to offer these products in over 40 languages in the not-too-distant future, we’re in for a rollercoaster.
OctoAI is the fastest place to run, tune, and scale generative AI models, and they just released accelerated versions of Llama 7B, 13B, and 70B with no sacrifice to accuracy.
For anyone building with LLMs, this is huge news!
You now have an open-source model to rival OpenAI’s, with the flexibility to use the Llama 2 variant that best achieves your goals:

Toyota's "Kindergarten for Robots": Where Breakfast is Served by Bots
Forget smart speakers and home assistants—the future of domestic robots may start with making your breakfast. Toyota Research Institute (TRI) is pushing the boundaries of what robots can do in our everyday lives. In a unique project referred to as a "kindergarten for robots," TRI is using generative AI to train robots in the culinary arts. Instead of coding every movement and command, these robots are equipped with a "sense of touch," allowing them to adapt and learn tasks more organically, much like a human would. This is more than just flipping pancakes; it's about rethinking how robots interact and (generatively) learn from their environment. Take a look below 👇
Unlike traditional training methods that involve countless hours of coding and debugging, these robots learn in a matter of hours, according to Ben Burchfiel, the lab’s manager. A teacher demonstrates specific skills, and the AI algorithms take it from there. Called "Large Behavior Models", these bots can generalize and perform new skills they've never been explicitly taught. So far, they've mastered over 60 complex skills, including pouring liquids and using tools, and the aim is to reach 1,000 skills by the end of 2024.
While Toyota's work is undoubtedly groundbreaking, it's worth noting that they aren't alone in this endeavor. Other tech giants like Google and Tesla are also working on AI-trained robots capable of more intuitive decision-making. What sets Toyota apart is the pace and adaptability of its training model, especially significant given the usually slow and labor-intensive nature of robotic research. It may still be early days, but the company's ambitious kindergarten might just graduate a new class of robots, ready to whisk your eggs in the morning or perhaps even prepare a complete breakfast feast.
For the first time ever… a 50/50 result! Perhaps it wasn’t so easy after all…
Arguments for each of Monday’s options ⬇️
Today, we’ve got a tricky one. We’ll be very impressed with those who get it correct.

👁️ Know What You Watch: TikTok Adds AI Labels
TikTok is introducing a new tool that allows creators to label AI-generated content. This move aims to add transparency and prevent viewer confusion about whether content has been edited or created with AI. The tool makes it easier for creators to adhere to TikTok's existing policies around synthetic media and deepfake, which have taken off recently on the platform. TikTok will also start testing an automatic "AI-generated" label for AI-edited or created content. These updates are part of a larger push for transparency around AI-generated content in the media, aligning with similar efforts from companies like OpenAI and Google.
💰 Writer Raises $100M to Turbocharge Generative AI for Businesses
Writer, a startup developing a full-stack generative AI platform for businesses, has raised $100 million in a Series B funding round led by ICONIQ Growth. The funds will be used to develop industry-specific text-generating AI models. The platform simplifies the hard work of data gathering, cleaning, and workflow construction and allows enterprises to host everything in a virtual private cloud. Writer distinguishes itself by offering fine-tunable models trained on non-copyrighted business writing and a transparent setup where customers can inspect the models' code, features, and data. The startup has garnered hundreds of high-profile customers and has seen its revenues grow tenfold in the last two years.
🎓AI in Education: How Outschool's New Teaching Assistant Optimizes Admin Tasks
Outschool, an online learning platform popular for its small group classes, has announced the introduction of an AI Teaching Assistant designed to streamline administrative tasks for tutors. Developed in partnership with OpenAI, the AI tool allows tutors to input bullet points about a student's performance, which it then transforms into a detailed progress report. Outschool is expanding its services to include one-on-one tutoring, positioning itself as a competitor to existing platforms like Varsity Tutors and Tutor.com. The move comes as the online tutoring market is expected to reach $23.73 billion by 2030.
