ChatGPT in the Classroom: OpenAI's Guide for Teachers and What It Means

OpenAI just dropped a guide for educators, detailing the creative and impactful ways leading teachers leverage ChatGPT to elevate educational outcomes for their students. The guide sheds light on several pivotal areas:

Summary of the Guide:

  1. Role-Playing Conversations: ChatGPT simulates different personas, such as debate partners or job interviewers, aiding students in deeper topic exploration.

  2. Crafting Educational Materials: ChatGPT helps generate quizzes and lesson plans that are culturally relevant and inclusive, tailored to student learning levels.

  3. Language Assistance: For non-English-speaking students, ChatGPT is a tool for translation and practicing English to boost academic opportunities.

  4. Fostering Critical Thinking: ChatGPT is employed to teach responsible AI use, focusing on the importance of critical thinking and information verification.

What does this mean?

With OpenAI releasing this guide, it appears that the education sector is increasingly embracing AI to enrich learning experiences rather than viewing it as a threat. When ChatGPT first gained traction at the end of 2022, many schools and colleges started banning it and other similar AI models, which wasn’t effective as most students continued to use it. However, using AI to aid education is more effective, and OpenAI's guide on how to do this is a step in the right direction.

As technologies like ChatGPT continue to evolve, the potential for their deeper integration into education is enormous. Future iterations could feature enhanced adaptive learning algorithms that can identify students' learning styles and adjust the material accordingly. Capabilities like this only serve to aid education.

A Banksy got everyday investors 32% returns?

Mm-hmm, sure. So, what’s the catch?

We know it may sound too good to be true. But thousands of investors are already smiling all the way to the bank, thanks to the fine-art investing platform Masterworks.

These results aren’t cherry-picking. This is the whole bushel. Masterworks has built a track record of 13 exits, including net returns of +10.4%, +27.3%, and +35.0%, even while financial markets plummeted.

But art? Really? Okay, skeptics, here are the numbers. Contemporary art prices:

  • outpaced the S&P 500 by 131% over the last 26 years

  • have the lowest correlation to equities of any asset class

  • remained stable through the dot-com bubble and ’08 crisis

WeatherBench 2: A Quantum Leap in Weather Forecasting, Marrying AI and Life-Saving Predictions

The debut of Google’s WeatherBench2 (WB2) marks a pivotal moment for weather forecasting, offering a robust standard for evaluating ML-based models like Google's own MetNet and GraphCast. These AI models now face rigorous assessment through WB2, measuring their forecasting accuracy and reliability against traditional physics-based models.

The platform isn't just focusing on deterministic forecasts; it also provides probabilistic metrics. In the inherently chaotic world of weather, gauging the likelihood of extreme events is as crucial as the forecast itself. WB2 incorporates these metrics, setting the stage for research aimed at making forecasts not only rapid and precise but also inherently reliable.

The versatility of WB2 is particularly crucial given the diverse forecasting needs across different sectors. Renewable energy producers are concerned with wind speeds, whereas crisis response teams want to track potential cyclones. This underlines the need for a comprehensive and standardized evaluation framework like WB2.

The potential for disaster prevention and management also makes this particularly game-changing. With AI models able to generate much quicker and potentially more accurate forecasts, we're looking at a future where predictive data can be deployed more effectively to mitigate natural disasters. From more precise evacuation plans to better-targeted resource allocation, the role of WB2 could be instrumental in elevating weather forecasting from a predictive tool to a life-saving mechanism.

𝕏 (Twitter) Updates Security: Auto-Flags All Instances of AI-Generated Fakes

X has enhanced its security features to better combat AI-generated images and videos on its platform. The "Community Notes" function, designed to provide important context for misleading posts, now automatically flags all instances of a specific image rather than just flagging each one individually. For instance, if a fake AI-generated photo of Elon Musk starts circulating, marking it once with community notes will automatically flag all subsequent posts of the same image. This update aims to decrease the spread of false or misleading AI-generated content on Twitter.

📊 Meta's FACET: A New Benchmark for Fairness in AI

Meta has released FACET, a comprehensive tool designed to evaluate biases in AI algorithms dealing with images and videos. The tool, encompassing 32,000 images labeled by human annotators across several geographic regions, offers "deep evaluations" of biases related to occupations, activities, and demographic features. While Meta itself acknowledges their past pitfalls in responsible AI, the company claims FACET as a more thorough benchmark than its predecessors, which even detected biases in Meta's own commercial DINOv2 algorithm. However, the ethical lens also focuses on the low wage given to the human annotators involved, questioning Meta's commitment to fairness in all aspects of AI development.

🤖 China's New AI Frontier: Baidu's ERNIE Bot Unveiled with Advanced Features

Chinese tech company Baidu has now fully opened its native Chinese AI chatbot, ERNIE Bot to the public. Similarly to chatGPT and other AI models, ERNIE Bot can do all that you would expect of a generative AI chatbot. It also has some interesting features like completing data analysis and creating visualizations of that data in charts and graphs, as well as converting text to video. The hope is that by opening ERNIE Bot to millions of users, Baidu will be able to drastically improve it based on real human data. Its initial release has clearly gone well with ERNIE Bot jumping to the #1 spot on the app store in China yesterday.

🗣️ AI in Language Learning: Speak Secures $16M to Replace Live Tutors

Speak, an AI-based English language learning platform, raised $16 million in a Series B-2 funding round, bringing its total funding to $63 million. The startup, initially popular in South Korea, plans to expand globally, including a U.S. launch by the end of 2023. The platform uses AI, including OpenAI's GPT-4, to offer personalized, interactive speaking experiences to help users improve their English skills. Unlike its competitors such as Duolingo, Speak focuses on low-cost language education and aims to replace the need for a live tutor. It has over 100,000 subscribers in South Korea alone and has helped nearly 6% of the country's population learn English.
