LinkedIn's New AI Features: What a Billion Users Should Know

Midjourney

As LinkedIn celebrates its 21st anniversary, the Microsoft-owned platform is far from resting on its laurels. With nearly 1 billion users, LinkedIn is innovating to stay relevant in a rapidly evolving technological landscape. One of the most notable leaps forward is a slew of new AI features set to redefine the way users engage in job hunting, marketing, and sales. Among the new tools, Recruiter 2024 stands out. This AI-assisted recruiting platform promises to revolutionize talent sourcing by enabling recruitment professionals to use generative AI, which helps them draft better search strings and even suggests candidates they may not have considered.

AI's influence doesn't stop at recruitment. The LinkedIn Learning section is introducing an AI-based Learning Coach, a chatbot designed to guide users through the platform's extensive catalog of learning videos. Initially, the focus will be on soft skills like effective delegation, but there's room for expansion into more technical areas. Marketers aren't left behind either. A new product called Accelerate aims to simplify marketing campaigns within LinkedIn. However, this comes with a caveat—Accelerate is limited to data and campaigns within the LinkedIn ecosystem, which might be limiting for marketers looking to extend their reach across different platforms.

With AI becoming increasingly mainstream, LinkedIn is leveraging technologies from its parent company, Microsoft, as well as from OpenAI—a firm 49% owned by Microsoft—to power these features. AI's omnipresence on the platform is not entirely new; it's been used to make uncannily accurate connection suggestions and offer insights about user activities for years. But what's changed is the world's broader acceptance of AI technologies, thanks in no small part to advances from companies like OpenAI. As LinkedIn continues to infuse its platforms with AI, it offers a compelling glimpse into the future of professional networking and business activities.

Deepfakes and Deception: The MrBeast Scam That Fooled TikTok

Midjourney

In a rather alarming incident, a deepfake ad featuring popular YouTuber MrBeast successfully bypassed TikTok's ad moderation technology. MrBeast, who is renowned for his extravagant giveaways and absurd stunt videos, appeared in the ad to offer 10,000 viewers an iPhone 15 Pro for just $2. For most, this would be a clear red flag signaling a scam. However, given MrBeast's reputation for similar, real giveaways, the ad seemed believable to many. This episode underlines the increasing sophistication of deepfake technology and poses serious questions about the efficacy of AI-driven moderation systems.

TikTok employs a mixture of human review and AI technology to scrutinize advertisements before they go live. Ironically, the AI technology that's supposed to detect such fraudulent activities was tricked by another AI that generated the MrBeast deepfake. The ad was eventually removed for violating TikTok's policies, but only after it had already gone live and potentially deceived viewers. This isn't a problem exclusive to TikTok; other social media giants like Meta also employ a blend of AI and human moderation for ad reviews. The rising incidence of deceptive deepfakes, therefore, represents a broader challenge for the industry at large.

The potential ramifications of deepfake technology extend well beyond misleading ads. Celebrities like Tom Hanks and CBS anchor Gayle King have already warned their followers about fraudulent ads featuring deepfakes of themselves. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has issued warnings, but regulation at a larger scale is easier said than done. As AI continues to advance and deepfakes become more accessible, the potential for misuse in critical areas like politics and global elections only amplifies, making this an urgent issue that demands immediate attention and action.

💡 Luda Introduces RT-RL: A Leap in Generative AI Techniques

Luda, a tech company specializing in user-friendly AI agent development, has announced a new system, Real-Time Reinforcement Learning (RT-RL). This innovative feature allows users to create AI agents that can interact within a physics-based environment, eliminating the need for complex coding. The announcement comes after a successful funding round of $7 million, led by Bitkraft Ventures and Compound, with notable participation from Google's Chief Scientist, Jeff Dean. Luda aims to revolutionize user-generated gameplay and other interactive experiences, providing a platform where users can construct AI agents through a browser-based simulation, leveraging accelerated learning and low-latency inference.

🎶 Spotify's New Leap: AI-Powered Playlists Under Development

Spotify is reportedly working on a new feature that allows users to create AI-generated playlists. The speculation arose after tech investor Chris Messina discovered references to "AI playlists" in the Spotify app's code. Although Spotify didn't confirm the feature, it could be an extension of their existing 'Niche Mixes' and might integrate with 'Blend,' which combines the musical tastes of different users. This move aligns with Spotify's increasing focus on AI, which includes an AI-powered DJ and translated podcasts. The company employs a large team devoted to machine learning and personalization, exploring diverse AI technologies.

💳Financial Frontier: Visa Pledges $100M to Advance Generative AI in commerce

Visa has revealed plans to invest $100 million in generative AI technologies that could shape the future of commerce and payments. The investment will be facilitated through Visa Ventures, their corporate investment arm. Generative AI, capable of creating text, images, or other content from prompts, is viewed as a game-changer in numerous fields, including commerce. Visa is particularly interested in startups that use generative AI to solve real-world issues in commerce, payments, and fintech. This move is aligned with Visa’s long-standing engagement with AI, going as far back as 1993.

🎥 Multimodal Approach: Unitary AI Raises $15M for Advanced Video Moderation

Unitary AI, a Cambridge-based startup, has raised $15 million in Series A funding to develop its unique "multimodal" approach to content moderation, particularly for video. The funding round was led by European VC Creandum and included Paladin Capital Group and Plural. Unitary AI's platform can analyze video content by simultaneously examining text, sound, and visuals to detect harmful or undesirable material. Currently classifying six million videos per day, the company plans to use the funds to expand geographically and add more languages. Despite a crowded space featuring big names like OpenAI and Microsoft, Unitary AI aims to fill a gap in effective video moderation.
