Over 500 individuals from the AI community have signed an open letter advocating for stringent regulation against AI-generated impersonations, known as deepfakes. The letter, which includes notable figures like Jaron Lanier, Frances Haugen, and Andrew Yang, emphasizes the societal threat posed by deepfakes and urges governments to enforce laws to curb their proliferation. It specifically calls for the criminalization of deepfake child sexual abuse materials, penalties for creating or distributing harmful deepfakes, and obligations for developers to prevent their technology from being used to generate harmful content.
