Marvel's AI Artistry: Innovation or Threat to Human Creativity?

Marvel's new series on Disney+, "Secret Invasion", has stirred up a storm because of its controversial opening theme. Marvel’s gone all futuristic on us and used AI-generated art to create its intro. Yep, you heard that right, AI art is now being used by multi-billion-dollar studio Disney in a show that’ll be watched by millions.

The credits are a visual feast, with a cascade of shadowy faces and cityscapes morphing into one another. The trailer was outsourced to Method Studios, an LA-based visual effects company founded in 1999.

Reviews on the trailer are mixed… some are calling it a sign of the times, while others are less than thrilled citing that it lacks a personal touch which according to Method Studios is inaccurate. Instead, they describe the production process as being both “highly collaborative and iterative, with a dedicated focus on this specific application of an AI toolset” but also emphasized that the AI tools used were meant to help its creative teams.

As "Secret Invasion" has shown, AI art can ruffle feathers and spark backlash from artists and audiences. There are practical issues too, like the hefty computing power needed to train big AI models and the risk of AI tools creating work that steps on copyright laws.

If AI becomes the go-to tool for VFX in film and TV, it could change how we see and value human creativity. Imagine sitting down to watch a movie or a TV show and knowing that the eye-popping visuals were cooked up by an algorithm, not a human. Would that take some of the shine off the artistry for you? Or would you be blown away by what AI can do and the new forms of art it can create? Then again, let’s not get ahead of ourselves… we’re still at least a few years away from those levels of generative AI.

Snowflake and Nvidia: A Power Partnership for Next-Gen AI Applications

Snowflake, the go-to for cloud-based data warehousing, and Nvidia, the heavyweight champ of AI and graphics processing units, announced a partnership at the Snowflake Summit 2023 on Monday with one key mission: to simplify building generative AI-powered applications.

Snowflake is also unveiling its secret weapon, the Snowpark Container Services. It's like a special VIP pass that lets customers and partners run Docker containers right inside the Snowflake party. It's all hush-hush and secure, ensuring only the right folks have access to the data. Nvidia will allow these applications to run on its mighty GPUs, bringing in some extra juice to make everything run smoother and faster.

But the partnership doesn't stop there… Nvidia's NeMo platform is also being integrated into the Snowflake Data Cloud. NeMo is like their magical toolbox, creating AI models that can understand and transcribe human speech, among other superpowers.

Nvidia's CEO, Jensen Huang, describes that "in the old days, you moved data to the computer, but when you have giant amounts of data like Snowflake does... then you move the compute to the data.” This metaphor clearly illustrates the paradigm shift facilitated by the partnership. In the past, we used to collect data and take it to a computer to be processed, like taking a puzzle to a table to solve. But now, with so much data out there (like the stuff Snowflake works with), it's like trying to move a mountain of puzzles to that table. So, instead of bringing the puzzle to the table, we take the solving process to the mountain - we take the computer processing power to where the information is.

This revolutionary partnership is poised to give businesses a competitive edge by enabling them to craft their own AI models while keeping their data secure. However, it's worth noting that this leap forward in technology could come with a significant price tag. We anticipate that the costs for customers looking to utilize this new product suite will likely be on the higher end, considering the hefty computational requirements of generative AI and Snowflake's current enterprise-focused offerings.

As time progresses, the cost of computing becomes more affordable, and AI models are more widespread it’s likely that every SMB will have its own custom ChatGPT sidekick.

🎮 Unity Unveils Sentis and Muse: AI's New Frontier in 3D Creation

Unity has introduced two new AI products: Unity Muse and Unity Sentis. These are aimed at revolutionizing the creative process in game development and other real-time 3D applications. Unity Muse is an AI platform that accelerates the creation of real-time 3D applications using natural input such as text prompts and sketches. Unity Sentis, on the other hand, allows developers to embed neural networks in their builds, enabling real-time experiences previously unimaginable. Sentis is the first cross-platform solution for embedding AI models into a real-time 3D engine, allowing AI models to run on any device where Unity runs. (link)

⚖️ Thomson Reuters Buys Legal AI Startup Casetext in $650M Deal

Thomson Reuters, a global news and data organization, is acquiring the San Francisco-based legal technology startup Casetext for $650 million. Casetext, which was valued at $125 million after a Series C funding round in 2022, uses artificial intelligence in its software to provide resources for lawyers. The company, which has over 10,000 customers and 104 employees, will join Thomson Reuters in accelerating the revolution in legal tech. This acquisition is part of Thomson Reuters' plan to spend around $100 million annually on artificial intelligence investments. (link)

🔒 Cyera Skyrockets to $500M Valuation with $100M Series B Funding

Israeli cybersecurity startup Cyera has secured $100 million in a Series B funding round at a $500 million valuation led by Accel. Cyera's AI-driven data security platform learns an enterprise’s unique data and business purpose, enabling it to automatically discover, classify, and secure sensitive data. The funding will be used to double its workforce in the upcoming year. (link)

Databricks Inc. has acquired generative AI startup MosaicML in a deal worth $1.3 billion, aiming to make open-source AI models more accessible to businesses. MosaicML's large language models will be integrated into Databricks' Lakehouse Platform, providing customers with more control over their data and the ability to customize generative AI models without incurring high costs.
