OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT: Multimodal Capabilities Now Include Sight, Sound, and Speech

Midjourney

OpenAI has rolled out a substantial update to its ChatGPT, incorporating multimodal functionalities. According to OpenAI's announcement blog, the upgraded GPT-3.5 and GPT-4 versions can now "perceive, vocalize, and interact." Included in these advancements is its ability to analyze images and respond within the context of a text conversation.

Another new feature is the implementation of voice synthesis, enabling fluid vocal interactions with ChatGPT. Users can pick from an array of five unique synthetic voices developed in association with seasoned voice artists. This marks a significant stride towards an increasingly engaging and lifelike AI experience.

Additionally, image recognition functionalities have been integrated into ChatGPT. Whether it's identifying issues with home appliances or suggesting meal plans based on what's in your fridge, the scope of this technology is virtually limitless.

Amazon’s $4 Billion Bet on Anthropic: What It Means for the Future of AI

Midjourney

In a landmark deal that signals increasing competition in the fast-growing Artificial Intelligence (AI) sector, Amazon has agreed to invest up to $4 billion in Anthropic, an AI startup. The initial investment is $1.25 billion for a minority stake, but Amazon has the option to eventually ramp this up to $4 billion. This move isn't just about money; it's a strategic play that positions Amazon against other tech giants like Microsoft, Meta, and Google. Anthropic is already backed by several investors and was valued at about $5 billion earlier this year. The startup recently launched Claude 2, a consumer-facing chatbot, and has ambitious plans to develop a "frontier model" that is projected to be 10 times more powerful than today’s leading AIs.

The partnership benefits both parties in tangible ways. For Anthropic, Amazon's investment provides not just capital but also significant computational resources. Anthropic plans to use Amazon Web Services (AWS) as its primary cloud provider for mission-critical workloads, including safety research and the development of future AI models. AWS's Trainium and Inferentia chips will be deployed for building, training, and deploying these foundation models. Amazon, on the other hand, finds in Anthropic a deep-pocketed ally that can significantly boost its cloud and AI offerings. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy sees this collaboration as a means to "improve many customer experiences, short and long-term."

Beyond the mutual benefits, this deal sets a precedent for the tech industry as a whole. Given that Microsoft has already invested as much as $11 billion in OpenAI, Amazon’s investment in Anthropic could trigger a ripple effect, spurring other tech giants to increase their stakes in AI startups. Additionally, Anthropic has made a "long-term" commitment to providing AWS customers around the world with access to future generations of its foundation models via Amazon Bedrock, AWS’s fully managed service. This alliance might well redefine how AI services are monetized and customized in the future.

We warned you it would be difficult…

🤝Snapchat Joins Forces with Microsoft: A New Era in Chatbot Advertising

Snapchat and Microsoft have teamed up to bring targeted advertising directly into Snapchat's AI chatbot, My AI. Powered by Microsoft's Ads for Chat API, the partnership aims to provide Sponsored Links right within the chat conversations, catering to users' specific queries. The initiative marks another leap for Microsoft's advertising division, extending its reach to Snapchat's youthful user base who prefer AI chats over traditional search engines. Although the feature is still in its "early experimental phase," it signifies an evolving landscape in how chat-based services could be monetized moving forward. A release date has yet to be confirmed.

🌍 Spotify Unveils: Multilingual Podcasts at Your Fingertips

Spotify has rolled out a voice translation feature powered by AI, enabling podcast creators to communicate in different languages using their own vocal tone. The initial rollout focuses on converting English episodes into Spanish, with future expansions into French and German on the horizon. The underlying technology leverages OpenAI's Whisper solution, capable of not just transcribing English audio but also converting other languages back to English. This feature is presently under trial with a select group of podcast creators.

🎨 NVIDIA & Getty: Introducing Generative AI for Customized Stock Photos

Getty Images and Nvidia are launching Generative AI by Getty Images, a new tool aimed at the commercial sector for creating tailor-made images through AI. Rather than relying on traditional stock photos, this technology enables users to generate new images based on specific prompts. Utilizing Nvidia's Edify model architecture, the tool has been trained on a massive database of Getty Images. Getty confirms that all images used in the training process are legally secured, offering clients indemnification via their royalty-free licensing deals. Nonetheless, the initiative sparks debates around the equitable remuneration for photographers and the attribution of generated images.

🎬 Hollywood Accord: WGA and Studios Conclude Strike with AI Terms

After a lengthy 146-day work stoppage, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and major film studios have tentatively decided to resolve their differences. The agreement was struck following five days of discussions, heavily centered on refining verbiage about the employment of generative AI in creating content. The settlement offers considerable advancements and safeguards for writers across multiple industries. Nonetheless, the cessation of the strike will be formally declared only once it receives the green light from the WGA's governing body and its members.
