ByteDance's Ripple: Humming a New Tune in AI-Powered Music Creation

ByteDance, the parent co of TikTok, has pulled the wraps off its latest brainchild: Ripple, an AI-powered music creation app. Currently in a closed, invite-only beta, Ripple aims to make creating and editing music tracks as easy as pie. It's similar to digital audio workstations (DAWs), but with a lessened need for expertise or and massive trial and error. Users just hum a tune into their phone's microphone, and voila, the app turns it into a full-blown song, complete with AI-generated instrumentals. The song's length matches the duration of the user's humming. Right now, Ripple’s limited to generating instrumentals, leaving the vocals to the user. The app also boasts a "virtual recording studio" that lets users tweak audio files to create their perfect song.

Ripple could send ripples through the music industry. By making music creation more accessible, Ripple could put the power to compose songs into the hands of anyone with a smartphone. This could trigger a wave of creativity and diversity in the music industry, as more people get the tools to express themselves through music. The app's link with TikTok also hints at a possible shift in how music is consumed and shared, with users able to create and upload their own tracks as background music for their TikTok’s.

But AI-powered music creation also brings some worries. The simplicity of creating music with Ripple could water down the value of musical expertise and craftsmanship. Musicians and composers who've spent years perfecting their skills might find themselves up against AI-assisted novices. Plus, the issue of copyright and ownership could get more complicated, as it might be hard to judge the originality of a piece of music created with AI's help. We saw a similar copyright issue with the hit “Heart on my Sleeve” by Ghostwriter which used AI-generated vocals of Drake and The Weeknd.

Despite these potential hurdles, Ripple's arrival is an exciting moment in the crossroads of AI and music. It captures the spirit of innovation and creativity that fuels both fields, and it'll be interesting to see how it shapes the future of music. Will it be a harmonious symphony or a jarring cacophony? Only time will tell. But one thing's for sure: the music industry is on the brink of a new era, and it's dancing to the rhythm of AI.

Valve's AI Stance: A Cautionary Tale in the Copyright Conundrum

Valve, a big name in video game development and digital distribution, has found itself in the middle of a tricky issue, like many others: the intersection of AI and copyright law. The company runs Steam, a popular online platform for video game distribution. Valve has announced that games on Steam can't use AI models trained on copyrighted works, citing "legal uncertainty" over such models. This decision stems from the difficulty of proving that content generated by AI, like images, text, and music, doesn't infringe on existing copyrights.

The heart of the issue is the vagueness of copyright laws when it comes to AI models. These laws were set up long before large-scale AI modeling came on the scene, so they don't provide clear guidelines for this new technology. Some people argue that machine learning based on copyrighted works falls under fair use, comparing it to human artists who are influenced by the art they study, reference, and remix. But this argument is challenged by artists and stock art companies who say that AI models copy their content wholesale without permission.

Imagine a scenario where an AI model is trained on the works of Vincent Van Gogh. The AI then creates a piece of art that closely mirrors Van Gogh's style. The question is: does this count as copyright infringement? The AI model hasn't copied a specific painting, but it has learned from and copied Van Gogh's unique style. This example shows how complex it is to apply traditional copyright laws to content generated by AI.

Valve's decision to say “no” to AI content trained on copyrighted material is a cautious response to this legal uncertainty. While this decision might limit the use of AI in game development on Steam, it also underlines the pressing need for copyright laws to keep up with technological advances. As AI continues to weave its way into various aspects of our lives, it's crucial for legal frameworks to provide clear guidelines for its use.
